{"id":11561,"date":"2016-09-21T13:22:53","date_gmt":"2016-09-21T17:22:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ourgrandmotherskitchens.com\/?p=11561"},"modified":"2023-08-24T22:03:31","modified_gmt":"2023-08-25T02:03:31","slug":"drink-eat-and-be-very-merry-indeed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ourgrandmotherskitchens.com\/?p=11561","title":{"rendered":"Drink, Eat, and Be Very Merry Indeed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11562\" src=\"https:\/\/ourgrandmotherskitchens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/spritis-web.jpg\" alt=\"spritis-web\" width=\"319\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ourgrandmotherskitchens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/spritis-web.jpg 319w, https:\/\/ourgrandmotherskitchens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/spritis-web-222x300.jpg 222w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 319px) 100vw, 319px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">I am one of the lucky food writers who have been invited to what is called the Abrams Dinner Party. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abramsbooks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Abrams Publishing <\/a>(long known for art books and more recently for colorful cookbooks) will be sending us books to review throughout the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">I\u2019m already behind on posting reviews (I\u2019m behind on EVERYTHING during this nutty season of the year) so I\u2019m giving you three at once.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><em>Colonial Spirits: A Toast to Our Drunken History<\/em> by Steven Grasse is charming\u2014so much so that although I THOUGHT I was going to set it aside as a prize for my upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/puddingcontest.wordpress.com\/2016\/07\/05\/the-hawley-gentlemens-pie-and-tart-extravaganza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hawley Gentlemen\u2019s Pie &amp; Tart Extravaganza<\/a>, I have decided that it needs to stay in my house so I can use it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">(In addition to enjoying the text I loved the old-fashioned typeface and the whimsical illustrations by the Reverend Michael Alan.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Grasse is a distiller himself and the creator of such successful historically oriented brands as Narragansett Beer and Hendrick\u2019s Gin. In his book he returns to colonial days, reminding the reader that since the water was unsafe to drink early white Americans turned to ale and other spirits to quench their thirst.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">He provides recipes and history for a variety of concoctions, including a variety of beers and wines (cock ale or quince wine, anyone?), ciders, and cocktails. I can now make beverages I had only previously encountered in historical novels, including syllabub, ratafia, and milk punch. (Okay, I may skip the milk punch.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Look for me to concoct such drinks as cranberry shrub and peach cobbler (yes, it\u2019s a cocktail as well as a dessert) on TV in the months to come.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11563\" src=\"https:\/\/ourgrandmotherskitchens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/wine-web.jpg\" alt=\"wine-web\" width=\"312\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ourgrandmotherskitchens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/wine-web.jpg 312w, https:\/\/ourgrandmotherskitchens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/wine-web-217x300.jpg 217w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 312px) 100vw, 312px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">In <em>The 24-Hour Wine Expert<\/em> Jancis Robinson offers a primer for people like me, who either don\u2019t drink wine or don\u2019t know much about it. She helps with selecting wines (telling the reader how to move from one wine s\/he likes to another s\/he will PROBABLY like), serving them, and storing them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">I have apparently stored much of the wine in my house a little too long.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">She also runs through the products of major wine-producing areas and tells the reader how to find a bargain. All in all, this is a handy little book.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><em>Butter &amp; Scotch<\/em> shares recipes from a combination bar and bakery in Brooklyn of the same name. The bar\u2019s founders, Allison Kave and Keavy Landreth, share their \u201cbaking and boozing philosophy,\u201d which is all about having fun while eating and drinking very well. Some of their recipes even combine butter and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiorscotch.com\"><span data-sheets-value=\"{&quot;1&quot;:2,&quot;2&quot;:&quot;Premium Scotch Liquor&quot;}\" data-sheets-userformat=\"{&quot;2&quot;:4225,&quot;3&quot;:{&quot;1&quot;:0},&quot;10&quot;:2,&quot;15&quot;:&quot;Arial&quot;}\">Premium Scotch Liquor<\/span><\/a> with delicious-sounding results. All of their recipes are imaginative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">I wanted to test at least one recipe from this book. I was tempted to try the very rich peanut-butter pie but decided to give my guests the slightly less caloric Mama T\u2019s Tuna Quiche.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Basically a rearranged tuna melt in a pie shell (I didn&#8217;t say it was calorie free!), the quiche was very popular with a group from my small hometown at a recent pot luck. I think another time I would grate the cheese instead of cubing it, to make it flow through the pie, but I\u2019ll definitely try it again!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11564\" src=\"https:\/\/ourgrandmotherskitchens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/butscweb.jpg\" alt=\"butscweb\" width=\"365\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ourgrandmotherskitchens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/butscweb.jpg 365w, https:\/\/ourgrandmotherskitchens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/butscweb-253x300.jpg 253w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 365px) 100vw, 365px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/puddingcontest.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/09\/mama-ts-tuna-quiche.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Mama T\u2019s Tuna Quiche<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">from <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Butter &amp; Scotch<\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">, used with permission<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Ingredients:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">1 single pie crust<br \/>\n1\/2 cup mayonnaise<br \/>\n1\/2 cup whole milk<br \/>\n2 large eggs<br \/>\n2 tablespoons flour<br \/>\n6 ounces Swiss cheese, cubed<br \/>\n1 (5-ounce) can tuna packed in water, drained<br \/>\n1\/3 cup sliced Kalamata olives<br \/>\n1\/4 cup thinly sliced scallions<br \/>\n1-1\/2 teaspoons Dijon mustard<br \/>\n1 pinch cayenne pepper<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Instructions:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Fit the crust into a pie pan. (The original recipe uses an 8-inch springform pan, which would be great, but I don\u2019t have one so I used a 9-inch pie pan.) Refrigerate until ready to fill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">In a large bowl beat together the mayonnaise, milk, eggs, and flour. Add the cheese, tuna, olives, scallions, mustard, and cayenne, and stir well. Pour all of the ingredients into the crust, and bake for 30 to 40 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the center has set. (The original recipe says 20 to 25 minutes, and if one has the springform that may work, but in my pie pan it took longer.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Allow the quiche to cool for at least 20 minutes, then serve it warm or at room temperature. Leftovers can be kept in the fridge for up to 1 week and warmed in a 350-degree oven for 15 minutes.
