Jody first found it in a small book from the 1940s called <em>A Grandmother for Christmas<\/em>. She has been making the cookies\u00a0since she was about 13.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Verdana&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Verdana&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Jody describes these oatmeal clumps as \u201chomely but yummy.\u201d They are indeed yummy, and they\u2019re homely in both senses of the world: they\u2019re a little plain,\u00a0and they speak of home.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Verdana&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Verdana&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Jody\u2019s home is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tregellysfarm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tregellys Fiber Farm<\/a>. It\u2019s on the other side of town from the Casa Tinky and looks as though it\u2019s in a different country. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Verdana&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Verdana&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">The hills outside my door are small and cozy; the ones outside Jody and her husband Ed\u2019s home are dramatic\u2014more like the Andes or the Himalayas than our humble Berkshires.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Verdana&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Verdana&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">The Cotheys raise exotic (mostly) fiber-producing animals and have an abiding interest in India, Nepal, and Tibet. Ed weaves lovely rugs and blankets from the fleece. The pair sell his handiwork as well as fair-trade international handicrafts in a shop called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pvlocalfirst.org\/businesses\/tregellys-world-fair-trade\" target=\"_blank\">Tregellys World<\/a> in nearby Shelburne Falls.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Verdana&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Verdana&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">When Jody isn\u2019t taking care of yaks, Icelandic sheep, or Bactrian camels she writes poetry under her maiden name, Pamela Stewart. Her new book of poems, <em>Ghost Farm<\/em>, is due out later this year from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pleasureboatstudio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pleasure Boat Studio<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Verdana&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Verdana&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">I don\u2019t know how she finds time to bake, but I\u2019m glad she does. It helps that these cookies are very, very easy. They hold together beautifully.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Verdana&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Verdana&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Jody says, \u201cThis is a fairly stiff mixture so have a strong wooden spoon and an adequate bowl, especially if doubling the recipe.\u201d Ed, who is a big fan of the cookies, adds that they freeze well.
