The spices\u00a0and the rich brown color might seem more appropriate for fall&#8211;or even winter.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: &amp;amp;amp;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: &amp;amp;amp;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">I couldn\u2019t resist using this recipe for this month\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ourgrandmotherskitchens.com\/?cat=919\" target=\"_blank\">Twelve Cookies of Christmas<\/a> entry, however. These cookies taste perfect after a summer swim. (A glass of milk is the ideal accompaniment.)<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: &amp;amp;amp;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: &amp;amp;amp;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">I came across the recipe almost by chance. I was expecting guests last weekend, and I was determined not to turn on the oven.\u00a0As Cole Porter wrote with such panache, it was\u00a0too darn hot. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: &amp;amp;amp;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: &amp;amp;amp;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">So I stopped at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.curtiscountrystore.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Curtis Country Store<\/a> in Charlemont, Massachusetts, and picked up some cookies baked by the talented Mary Jane Miller.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: &amp;amp;amp;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: &amp;amp;amp;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">That evening I apologized to my guests for not serving them homemade cookies. As soon as I tasted one of Mary Jane\u2019s ginger cookies, I realized that no apology had been necessary. I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever made a cookie better than these!<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: &amp;amp;amp;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: &amp;amp;amp;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Mary Jane was kind enough to\u00a0give me\u00a0the recipe to\u00a0share with you. Of course, if you happen to live near the Curtis Country Store, I encourage you to buy Mary Jane\u2019s cookies. They are huge (I cut the size down a bit for home baking) and absolutely delicious\u2014sort of a cross between a soft ginger cookie and a snickerdoodle.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: &amp;amp;amp;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-family: &amp;amp;amp;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">You may be tempted to substitute butter for the shortening in this recipe. Beat in the egg and the molasses.
